Dr. Clarence Clottey: Transforming Wellness Leadership

Dr. Clarence Clottey | Wellness Strategist & Public Health Leader | Championing Equity, Corporate Well‑Being & Community Impact | CEO at Wellness and Health Pro

Meet Dr. Clarence Clottey
A seasoned public health leader, physician, and wellness strategist with over 25 years of international experience. As CEO of Wellness and Health Pro, he empowers individuals, organizations, and communities through evidence-based wellness solutions and equity-driven leadership. From leading national health policy in Canada to championing corporate well-being across borders, Dr. Clottey is redefining what it means to heal, lead, and uplift in today’s world.

When Dr. Clarence Clottey first imagined becoming a physician, it wasn’t just about medicine, it was about mission. Raised in Brazil and born in Ghana, Dr. Clottey’s global upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for humanity’s shared struggles and strengths. His childhood dream of becoming a military doctor evolved into something far more expansive: a lifelong calling to serve communities through compassion, science, and equity. Over time, that vision transformed from clinical practice to shaping public health policies that would affect millions.

“It was the idea that one could help bring people out of pain and suffering that made me want to pursue a career in medicine,” he once shared.

That purpose-driven mindset continues to anchor every decision he makes, from local consultations to international health strategy.

Dr. Clottey’s academic journey is as distinguished as his professional one. He earned his Master of Public Health from Harvard University, then pursued further specialization in Family Medicine (CCFP) and Public Health and Preventive Medicine (FRCPC) from the University of Toronto. Fluent in English, Portuguese, French, and several African languages, he brings a rare cultural fluency and human-centered empathy to his work.

From his earliest days in Ghana to his formative years in Brazil, Dr. Clottey internalized the value of diversity, equity, and faith. These pillars have guided his leadership style and personal integrity throughout his life. He’s not only a physician, but also a family man, spiritual thinker, and cultural bridge-builder. His Christian faith and belief in purposeful service are central to who he is, both inside and outside the boardroom.

Dr. Clottey’s career spans across continents and sectors. He began as Medical Officer of Health for the Saskatoon Health Region, where he made national headlines by advocating for a public smoking ban in the 1990s, a bold and unpopular stance at the time.

“I was one of the early public health leaders in Canada who fought to ban smoking in public places,” he reflects.

The battle came with public backlash, including threats and resistance. But in a testament to his courage and conviction, an editorial in a local newspaper praised him as he left for Ottawa, a moment he considers one of the most satisfying in his career.

At the federal level, Dr. Clottey served as Director of the Diabetes Division at Health Canada, where he led the development of a national collaborative strategy for diabetes prevention and contributed to the establishment of a national diabetes surveillance system for Canada. Later, he directed the Evidence and Information for Chronic Disease Policy unit at the Public Health Agency of Canada, and worked with the World Health Organization Collaborating Center on Chronic Disease Policy, advising on policy evaluation and Best Practices across Brazil, Costa Rica, and Canada.

His consultancy roles have included advising the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), chairing Saskatchewan’s Provincial HIV/AIDS Advisory Committee, and evaluating disease control programs in Africa for the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation.

Now at the helm of Wellness and Health Pro, Dr. Clottey focuses on corporate wellness, productivity consulting, and individual coaching, applying his public health expertise to improve mental and physical well-being in workplace and community settings. His approach is grounded in equity, practicality, and measurable results.

Ellen Hagan, CEO of L’AINE HR, recalls working with him:

Kofy Hagan, Chief People Officer at EchoHouse, echoed:

He speaks openly about second impressions, particularly as a man of color navigating leadership roles:

Through his writing, speaking, and consulting, Dr. Clottey continues to challenge the status quo, educate others on mental health, stress management, and productivity, and encourage workplaces to thrive through human-first leadership.

Dr. Clottey remains focused on advancing wellness in a way that is holistic, inclusive, and sustainable. Whether working with CEOs or counseling individuals, his goal is always the same: to help people live healthier, more fulfilled lives. He sees the rising challenges of misinformation, burnout, and workplace stress as opportunities to do more, not less.

“I’m looking forward to any new challenges life throws my way, meeting new allies, and contributing everything I can to make this world a better place.”

He continues to advocate for mental strength, empathy in leadership, and resilience in adversity, often sharing insights such as:

“Taking a risk is always better than no attempt.”

His vision isn’t just about adding years to life, but life to years.

Dr. Clarence Clottey’s story is one of service over status, purpose over prestige. A healer, policymaker, mentor, and advocate, he exemplifies what it means to lead with wisdom, courage, and compassion. Through every challenge, he has remained rooted in his faith, fueled by his purpose, and focused on his mission to empower others to live well—mind, body, and soul.

Dr. Clarence Clottey’s journey invites readers to reflect on their own leadership values and wellness practices. In a world facing rising health disparities and workplace pressures, his example reminds us that true leadership begins with empathy, equity, and the courage to care. For organizations seeking to elevate performance through well-being, Dr. Clottey offers a transformative perspective worth embracing.
